Term initially applied by art critic Vladimir Stasov (1824–1906) to the St Petersburg group of five composers – Mily Balakirev, Aleksandr Borodin, César Cui, Modest Mussorgsky, and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov – whose establishment of a distinctively Russian nationalist idiom he promoted.
