Flagello, Nicolas (1928-1994)

US composer, conductor, and pianist of Italian descent. He gave piano recitals from the age of five, and studied in Rome and at the Manhattan School of Music; he was a professor there 1950-77. He has conducted the New York City and Chicago Lyric Operas, and accompanied leading singers on the piano. His Italian origins are reflected in his music.

operas Mira (1953), Rip Van Winkle (1957), The Sisters (1958), The Judgment of St Francis (1959), The Pied Piper of Hamelin (1970), and Beyond the Horizon (1983); two symphonies (1968, 1970), four piano concertos (1950, 1956, 1962, 1975), concerto for saxophone quartet and orchestra (1985); Passion of Martin Luther King, oratorio (1968); choruses, songs, and chamber music.
