Flaminian Way

Roman road, built 220 BC by the censor Gaius Flaminius. It was 336 km/209 mi long and was the principal road running northwards from Rome to Ariminum (present-day Rimini). The road was restored by the emperor Augustus.

Leaving Rome via the Pons Mulvius (Milvian Bridge), the Flaminian Way ran by way of Narnia, Carsulae, and Mevania to Forum Flaminii (in imperial times via Interamna and Fulginiae, where a branch diverged to Perusia). It then ran to Nuceria and over the main ridge of the Apennines to Calles, Forum Sempronii, Fanum Fortunae on the Adriatic coast, Pisaurum, and Ariminum. The arch erected by Augustus at the end of the road can still be seen at Rimini.
