Flanders, Ralph Edward (1880-1970)

US mechanical engineer and senator. After editing Machine in New York City, he became president of a Vermont machine tool company. As a Republican representing Vermont in the US Senate, he introduced the resolution that censured Senator Joseph McCarthy (1954).

He was born in Barnet, Vermont. During World War II, he was on the War Production Board and then became president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston (1944-46). In the US Senate, he was a moderate and sat on several important committees.
