Flathead| River rising as the North Fork in southeast British Columbia, Canada, and flowing into Montana, USA, through Flathead Lake, to join the Clark Fork River; length 386 km/240 mi. The various branches of the Flathead flow through wilderness and are enjoyed by boaters and campers. |
Course The Flathead flows into northwest Montana just east of the Whitefish Range. It then forms the border between Glacier National Park and the Flathead National Forest. It receives its Middle Fork north of Coram. Continuing southwest, it receives its South Fork and then flows through Flathead Lake, which, with an area of 490 sq km/189 sq mi, is the largest lake in Montana, before joining the Clark Fork River just northeast of Dixon. |
