Flavin, Dan

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.04 sec.

Flavin, Dan (1933–1996)

US sculptor and environmental artist. He specializes in the use of light technology. His simple installations using standard coloured or white neon tubes alter the viewer's perceptions of the surrounding space. The tactics are reductive, yet the results are often sublimely decorative, as in the coloured-neon arrangement Untitled (to Agrati) (1964; Saatchi Collection, London).

Flavin began as a minimalist, exhibiting his ‘light boxes’ in the 1960s; he later evolved to constructing elegant clusters of neon tubes.
