Fleetwood

Port and seaside resort in Lancashire, England, at the mouth of the River Wyre, 13 km/8 mi from Blackpool; population (2001) 26,850. Industries include icemaking, fishing, fresh fish wholesaling, and the manufacture of chemicals, plastics, leather goods, and confectionery. The port handles chemicals and miscellaneous containerized goods, mainly trading with Ireland.

The Fleetwood Harbour Village retail park has been developed in the docks area. Tourism and the service sector also provide significant employment.

Fleetwood was formerly one of the chief fishing ports in Britain and, although the industry has declined, it remains England's major west coast fishing centre.
