    0.03 sec.

Fleisher, Leon (1928– )

US pianist, conductor, and teacher. After appearing with the New York Philharmonic at the age of 16, he began a brilliant solo career. In 1964, an ailment to his right hand meant he could only play left-hand piano pieces, and he moved into conducting and teaching.

Born in San Francisco, California, he studied in the USA and with Artur Schnabel in Europe. He pursued his conducting and teaching careers at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, and the Berkshire Music Center in New York. He won several awards, including Kennedy Center honours in 2007.

Fleisher, Leon (1928– )

US pianist and conductor. He studied with Artur Schnabel, appeared with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra before World War II, and in 1952 won the Queen Elisabeth Competition, in Brussels. In the early 1960s he lost the use of his right hand, but learned the piano left-hand repertory and conducted major orchestras all over the USA. After surgery in 1981 he was able to resume his bimanual career as a piano soloist. From 1959 he was active as a teacher and then a conductor in Baltimore.
