Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.02 sec.

Fleming, Victor (1883–1949)

US film director. He worked as a cameraman for D W Griffith and Douglas Fairbanks. He directed for Paramount and then Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. His two best-known films are The Wizard of Oz (1939) and his Academy Award-winning Gone With the Wind (1939).

He was born in Pasadena, California and started in Hollywood in 1910 as an assistant cameraman. He was hired as official cameraman for President Woodrow Wilson's trip to Europe and on his return made his directorial debut, launching a three-decades-long career as one of Hollywood's more reliable directors. Although many of his movies were fairly routine masculine adventures, he did have a talent for extracting excellent performances from some of his leading ladies.
