Flemington

Town and administrative headquarters of Hunterdon County, west-central New Jersey; population (1990) 4,000. It is located 24 km/15 mi north of Princeton. Local products include glass, rubber goods, and electronic equipment. It is best known, however, for the many retail and ‘factory outlet’ stores located here. Tourism is also important to the local economy, and the town is at the centre of a fast-growing residential area.

Settled in the early 18th century, it prospered as a distribution point for local agricultural products. In 1935, its county courthouse was the scene of the sensational Lindbergh kidnapping trial (see Charles Lindbergh). Throughout the first half of the 20th century, Flemington was a noted manufacturer of pottery and cut glass; today, one glass factory remains.
