FlemishMember of the West Germanic branch of the Indo-European language family, spoken in north Belgium and the Nord département of France. It is closely related to Dutch. In opposition to the introduction of French as the official language in the Flemish provinces of Belgium after 1830, a strong Flemish movement arose.
