Fletcher, Horace (1849–1919)

Writer and lecturer on nutrition. In 1895 a life-insurance company refused to accept him as a risk because he was 23 kg/50 lb overweight and was frequently ill. He attributed his recovery to a change in eating habits, popularized as Fletcherism: eat only when hungry; eat whatever appeals; chew each mouthful until it swallows itself; eat only when relaxed. He made no money from his zealous instruction.
