Fleurus

Town in the province of Hainaut, Belgium, 11 km/7 mi northwest of Charleroi; population (2001 est) 21,800. It was the site of three important battles: in 1622 during the Thirty Years' War, in 1690 during the Nine Years' War, and in 1794 during the French Revolutionary Wars.

In 1622 the Germans, under the Duke of Brunswick and Count Ernst von Mansfeld, gained a victory at Fleurus over the Spaniards. In 1690 the French, under the Duke of Luxembourg, defeated the allied Dutch and German forces, who were led by the Prince of Waldeck. In 1794 the French, under Jean Baptiste Jourdan, defeated the Austrians under the Duke of Coburg.
