flexible manufacturing system

Manufacturing system that integrates robotics, automated guided vehicles, and CAM (computer-aided manufacturing). The system is totally automated and allows unattended production of parts.

Advantages of FMS include: increased productivity; reduced costs; performance of a variety of menial mundane tasks freeing up personnel for more complex task; the ability to switch between types of production while still running; and the production of one or many units in an agreed response time. Companies that employ FMS include Dell and Levi Strauss.

A prototype flexible manufacturing cell for the production of wooden furniture components was developed at North Carolina State University and demonstrated to the American Furniture Manufacturers Assn.
Each OEM should concentrate on component sets and a low-cost flexible manufacturing structure, and insist that all vehicles in their lineup are package protected for and designed around common standards.
ISPE said the launch was partly in response to a request from the FDA for ISPE to "play a role in their plan to be a catalyst for change to enable fully flexible manufacturing concepts, within regulation, using the best engineering and scientific principles available, improving business and taking risk into consideration.
