Fliegende Holländer, Der

Opera by Wagner (libretto by composer, based on Heinrich Heine's Memoiren des Herrn von Schnabelewopski, Frederick Marryat's novel The Phantom Ship, and other sources), first produced in Dresden, Germany, on 2 January 1843. The story tells how a Dutchman is condemned by blasphemy to sail his ship forever until redeemed by the love of a faithful woman; Senta, ready to die for him, is his saviour.
