Florianópolis

Seaport, resort and capital of Santa Caterina federal unit (state), southeast Brazil, 480 km/300 mi south of São Paulo; population (1991) 256,000. It is situated on Santa Caterina Island, which is linked to the mainland by two bridges, one of which, the Ponte Hercílio Luz, is the longest steel suspension bridge in Brazil. Exports include sugar, tobacco, and fruit. Florianopolis is used as a port of call for coastal shipping and has developed as a tourist beach resort. There is a cathedral (constructed 1753-73, modified 1922) and a university. The city was founded in 1770.

The bridge was closed in 1994 as it had been structurally unsound for several decades.
