Florio, John (c. 1553–1625)

English author and translator. His writings include his Italian–English dictionary A World of Words (1598) and his translation of Montaigne's essays (1603), dedicated to Lucy, Countess of Bedford.

Florio was born in London, the son of refugee Italian Protestants. His father acted as tutor to the ill-fated lady Jane Grey. John Florio became acquainted with the circle around Sir Philip Sidney and with Samuel David. He taught at Oxford, and in 1603 was appointed reader in Italian to James I's wife, Queen Anne, being made groom of the chamber the following year. He also taught James's son, Henry, Prince of Wales.
