Florissant

Town in St Louis County, east-central Missouri; population (1990) 51,200. It is located 23 km/14 mi northwest of downtown St Louis. It was an early Jesuit missionary centre, and today vestiges of this residential suburb's Gallic past draw a sizeable tourist trade. The Old St Ferdinand Shrine (1821) is believed to be the oldest Catholic church between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains. The city is home to the St Louis Christian College (1956).

It was founded in 1786 by the Spanish, who called it St Ferdinand, but was renamed for its flowering (fleurissant) valley by French farmers and trappers who settled here in the 1780s; its French name was not officially recognized until 1939.
