Focşani

Capital of Vrancea county, Romania; 200 km/125 mi northeast of Bucharest; population (2002) 101,900. It is a commercial centre, with trade along the River Milcov, which joins the River Siret, to Galaţi. An Austro-Russian alliance defeated the Turks at Focşani 1789, during a sustained offensive against the Ottoman Empire in the Balkans.
