Foggia

Town of Apulia region, southern Italy, 120 km/75 mi northwest of Bari; population (2001) 155,200. The town is an important communications hub, with cellulose, paper, engineering, and flour industries. It is also the market centre of a fruit- and wheat-growing plain known as the Tavoliere (chess-board). Natural gas is found nearby.

Foggia suffered severe damage in World War II. The cathedral, dating from about 1170, was rebuilt after an earthquake in 1731.

Province of southeast Italy in northwest Puglia region; capital Foggia; area 7,189 sq km/2,776 sq mi; population (2000 est) 693,900. It was formerly named Capitanata and was a province of the Kingdom of Naples.
