Foggia

Town of Apulia region, southern Italy, 120 km/75 mi northwest of Bari; population (2001) 155,200. The town is an important communications hub, with cellulose, paper, engineering, and flour industries. It is also the market centre of a fruit- and wheat-growing plain known as the Tavoliere (chess-board). Natural gas is found nearby.

Foggia suffered severe damage in World War II. The cathedral, dating from about 1170, was rebuilt after an earthquake in 1731.
