Fonseca, Gulf of

Gulf on the Pacific coast of Central America, bordered by El Salvador in the north and northwest, Honduras in the north and northeast, and Nicaragua in the south; it measures 80 km by 48 km (50 mi by 30 mi). Five major rivers flow into the gulf: the Choluteca, Estero Real, Negro, Goascoran, and Torola. The surrounding shores are dotted with volcanoes.
