Fontana

City in San Bernardino County, southwest California; population (1990) 87,500. It is located 72 km/45 mi east of Los Angeles, and 11 km/7 mi west of San Bernardino. The city's economy was agricultural until World War II, when a huge Kaiser steel plant was established. The manufacture of steel and steel products is its major industry; ammunition, electronic equipment, and industrial gases are also made. In the 1980s the city's population more than doubled.
