Fontenelle, Bernard le Bovier de (1657–1757)

French philosopher and poet. Fontenelle had a reputation for popularizing science and philosophy in a lively and elegant way. He was admitted to the French Academy in 1691, in spite of the opposition of Racine and Boileau, and to the Academy of Sciences in 1697. His more important works include Dialoge des morts (1683).
