Forbes, John Murray (1813–1898)

French-born US capitalist. An accomplished businessman, he built up a fortune and began investing in railroad building in the Midwest. After the American Civil War, he continued to apply both financially sound and socially responsible methods to his railroad interests.

He was born in Bordeaux and, at age 15, he entered his uncles' counting house business, Perkins and Company, working in their China office for seven years. During the Civil War he helped organize black American regiments in Massachusetts, and, along with his brother Robert Bennet Forbes, assisted the US Navy with his maritime expertise. He was active in the Republican Party.
