Ford, Betty (1918- )

US first lady. She married Gerald Ford in 1948. She endorsed the Equal Rights Amendment and women's right to abortion. Following her own problems with alcohol and drugs, she helped establish The Betty Ford Clinic, a treatment centre in California.

She was born in Chicago, Illinois. She trained as a dancer and spent some years with the Martha Graham Company.
