forensic entomology

Branch of forensic science, involving the study of insects on and around the corpse. Insects rapidly infest a corpse, and do so in an accepted sequence beginning with flies laying eggs. Further insects follow to feed on the decomposing flesh and fly maggots. Forensic entomologists are able to determine time of death by analysing insect colonization. They can also tell whether or not a corpse has been moved by examining the faunal community in the ‘seepage area’ beneath the body.
