Forkel, Johann Nikolaus (1749–1818)

German organist and music historian. He studied law at Göttingen, where he was director of music at the University from 1779 to his death. Among his many writings his biography of Bach (1802) is most notable – it was the first biography of Bach and an important contribution to the awakening interest in his music.
