Town and market centre in Emilia-Romagna region, northeast Italy, on the River Montone, 60 km/37 mi southeast of Bologna; population (1992) 109,100. Felt, majolica pottery, and paper are manufactured. There is a 17th-century cathedral, and a Romanesque church (begun 1179) with a campanile (bell-tower).
