Formula 1

Form of motor racing. Formula 1 Grand Prix racing first began in 1906. A world championship for drivers has been in existence since 1950 and for constructors since 1958. The first eight drivers and cars in each race are awarded 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point respectively, and the cumulative total at the end of a season decides the winners.

In 2003 the season consisted of 16 Grands Prix with races in Australia, Malaysia, Brazil, San Marino, Spain, Austria, Monaco, Canada, France, Great Britain, Germany (two), Hungary, Italy, USA, and Japan.

Purpose-built circuits include: Brands Hatch, Brooklands (to 1939), Donington, and Silverstone, UK; Hockenheim and Nurburgring, Germany; Monza and Imola, Italy; Indianapolis, Indiana; Interlagos, Brazil. Street circuits include Detroit, Michigan, and Monte Carlo, Monaco.
