Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.01 sec.

Forrest, Edwin (1806-1872)

US stage actor. He made a successful New York debut as Iago in Othello (1826). His rivalry with actor William Macready led to riots in New York, and 30 people were killed during a fight between the two actors' adherents.

Born in Philadelphia, he was a strikingly handsome, flamboyant man who excelled in tragic roles and he became a great favourite among ordinary theatregoers. His stage debut was in 1820 in Douglas. After the riot, he fell out of favour as new styles of performance became popular and his last performance was in 1872 at the Globe Theatre in Boston.
