Forrester, Maureen (1930– )

Canadian contralto. She made her debut in recital at Montreal in 1953, appeared in Paris in 1955, and made her New York Town Hall debut in 1956. The following year she sang in Mahler's Resurrection Symphony, under Bruno Walter, with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, and in the Verdi Requiem in London, under Sargent. Her debut in opera was in Toronto in 1961, as Gluck's Orpheus, and other roles included Ulrica, Brangaene, Cornelia in Giulio Cesare, and La Cieca. In 1975 she made her belated New York Metropolitan Opera House debut, as Erda in Das Rheingold. She was well known in Das Lied von der Erde/The Song of the Earth and as the Angel in The Dream of Gerontius.
