Forssmann, Werner

Forssmann, Werner (1904-1979)

German heart surgeon who was awarded a Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1956 for his work on the technique for passing a catheter into the heart for diagnostic purposes, which he originated by practising the technique on himself in 1929.

Forssmann was born in Berlin and educated at the university there, qualifying as a doctor in 1929.
