Fort Atkinson

Fort Atkinson

Town in Jefferson County, southeast Wisconsin; population (1990) 10,200. It is located 48 km/30 mi southeast of Madison. Set on both banks of the Rock River, it serves the surrounding dairy and truck farming region as a trade and shipping centre. Industries include food processing, beermaking, and the manufacture of farm equipment, electrical fixtures, and hosiery.

The city lies in an area where prehistoric American Indian mounds are plentiful; the Panther Intaglio mound is on its west outskirts. Lake Koshkonong is 5 km/3 mi southwest.
