Fort Benton

Town and administrative headquarters of Chouteau County, north-central Montana; population (1990) 1,700. It is situated on the Missouri River, 56 km/34 mi northeast of Great Falls.

The oldest white community in Montana, it had an 1846 fur trade fort, and by 1859 was the starting point for the Mullan Road, which crossed the Continental Divide to Walla Walla, Washington, linking the Missouri and Columbia river systems. The Whoop-up Trail was used by illegal whiskey traders going north to Alberta, Canada. From 1859-87, Fort Benton was a busy steamboat port, landing immigrants, prospectors, traders, and cattlemen. The town has monuments to Lewis and Clark's 1805 passage and to other early history.
