Fort Berthold

    0.04 sec.

Fort Berthold

American Indian reservation in McKenzie, Dunn, Mercer, McLean, Ward, and Mountrail counties, west-central North Dakota; population (1990) 5,400. Though the east area is arable, most of it consists of rugged, broken badlands best suited for grazing. The reservation is crossed by Lake Sakakawea. It is occupied by remnants of the Arikara, Mandan, and Hidatsa, three agricultural tribes that inhabited the Missouri River Valley. Its administrative headquarters is in New Town; population (1990) 1,400. This was built by the Army Corps of Engineers (1952) after floods inundated various American Indian communities.

Originally a trading post established in 1845, it became a military facility 20 years later. The reservation was formed in 1870.
