Fort Bragg

Town in Mendocino County, northwest California; population (2000) 7,000. It is located 220 km/136 mi north-northwest of San Francisco, on the Pacific coast. Named for an 1857 Army post, it engages in redwood lumber milling and fishing, ships regional farm produce, has an artists' colony, and is a popular tourist destination.

Fort Bragg

Military reservation in Hoke and Cumberland counties, central North Carolina; area 520 sq km/200 sq mi; population (1990) 34,700. It is located to the northwest and west of Fayetteville. The installation was established in 1918 and became an important training centre in World War II. It was home to the Green Berets in the Vietnam era. The 82nd Airborne Division is among the units now based here. The area includes Pope Air Force Base, centre for troop-carrier aircraft. Fort Bragg dominates the economies and culture of Fayetteville, Southern Pines, and other nearby communities.
