Fort Davis

Historic settlement and the administrative headquarters of Jeff Davis County, in the Trans-Pecos region of west Texas; population (1990) 900. It is situated in the Davis Mountians, 35 km/22 mi northwest of Alpine and 278 km/173 mi southeast of El Paso, the community is now a tourist centre. It was established in 1854 on the road between San Antonio to the east and El Paso to the west; the fort operated until 1891 to protect settlers and stage routes.
