Fort Edward

Town in Washington County, east New York; population (1990) 6,300. It is situated on the east bank of the Hudson River, 8 km/5 mi southeast of Glens Falls, in the strategic area between the Hudson River and Lake Champlain. Fort Edward's mills were vital to its economy from the settlement's beginnings in 1755; it was also a pottery manufacturing centre. Mills continue to be important, with pulp and paper among the town's diversified manufactures.
