Fort Erie

Town in the Niagara Regional Municipality, south Ontario, Canada; population (1991) 26,000. It is situated on Lake Erie and the Niagara River, opposite Buffalo, New York. The town manufactures steel, paint, auto accessories, pharmaceuticals, and aircraft, and is visited for its Crystal Beach and its horse track. The Peace and International Railway bridges connect it with Buffalo.

A British military post was built here in 1764. American troops seized, held, and later destroyed it during the War of 1812. The town of Fort Erie was established in 1932 with the consolidation of the village of Fort Erie, which had developed near the fort, and the town of Bridgeburg. The fort was reconstructed in the late 1930s.
