Fort Kent

Town in Aroostook County, north Maine; population (2000) 4,200. It is situated on the St John River, opposite Clair, New Brunswick, Canada. It is a retail and service centre for a potato and lumber region in Maine and Canada. A gateway to the Allagash wilderness, Fort Kent is a supply point for canoeists, hunters, and anglers. A University of Maine campus is here. The town was named after an existing fort built in 1839 to protect lumber interests, but the community was settled about ten years earlier by Acadians.
