Tamanrasset

Oasis town and administrative centre in southern Algeria, at the foot of the Ahaggar Mountains; population (1990 est) 39,200. The town lies at a height of 1,4000 m/4,600 ft and has a central position in the Sahara on the main trans-Saharan highway from Algeria to Niger. With the added advantage of an airport, it is a centre for trade and for the tourist industry, though development since the 1990s had been hindered by civil unrest in Algeria. The town is a meeting place for nomadic Tuaregs, and is one of the largest Tuareg cities in north Africa.

The town is the home of an observatory and a museum of the Ahaggar, whose exhibits illustrate Tuareg culture.

The Christian hermitage at Assekrem, founded in 1910 by the French explorer Charles de Foucauld, is 75 km/47 mi northeast of the town.
