Fort Laramie

Small town in Goshen County, southeast Wyoming; population (1990) 200. It is a trade centre situated on the North Platte River, at the point in the high plains where it is joined by the Laramie River, 130 km/82 mi northeast of Laramie. 5 km/3 mi to the southwest is the site of Fort Laramie, an 1834-49 fur post purchased and operated (1849-90) by the government as a major stopover for westbound migrants on the Oregon Trail and routes to California. The first Wyoming military post, it was also the site of numerous parleys with regional tribes.

The Second Treaty of Fort Laramie, signed in 1868, had promised peace with the Sioux.
At Fort Laramie, in what is now Wyoming, Reed bumped into an old friend named James Clyman, a man who had ridden over the Hastings Cutoff.
The Treaty of Fort Laramie in 1868 recognized Lakota ownership of the Missouri River and millions of acres to the west.
