Fort Laramie

Small town in Goshen County, southeast Wyoming; population (1990) 200. It is a trade centre situated on the North Platte River, at the point in the high plains where it is joined by the Laramie River, 130 km/82 mi northeast of Laramie. 5 km/3 mi to the southwest is the site of Fort Laramie, an 1834-49 fur post purchased and operated (1849-90) by the government as a major stopover for westbound migrants on the Oregon Trail and routes to California. The first Wyoming military post, it was also the site of numerous parleys with regional tribes.
