Fort Lewis

Town in Pierce County, west-central Washington; population (1990) 22,200. It is located 21 km/13 mi south-southwest of Tacoma and to the southwest of Lakewood. It is a residential suburb and service town for the 520-sq km/200-sq mi Fort Lewis, which was established in 1917 as an infantry training centre; it is the West Coast's largest army base. McChord Air Force Base is to the northeast.
