Fort Morgan

Town and administrative headquarters of Morgan County, northeast Colorado; population (1990) 9,100. It is situated on a plateau overlooking the South Platte River, 113 km/70 mi northeast of Denver. A former military outpost (1864) on the Overland Trail, the community developed as an agricultural shipping point. It is a trade centre, refines beet sugar, cans vegetables, and manufactures tools, auto parts, pipe, and concrete products. It is home to Morgan Community College. Pawnee National Grassland is 19 km/12 mi to the north.
