Fort Myers

City and administrative headquarters of Lee County, southwest Florida, USA, on the Caloosahatchee River, 150 km/93 mi southeast of St Petersburg, near the Gulf of Mexico; population (2000) 48,200. Fort Myers grew rapidly as a resort during the 1920s. Still a popular tourist city, it also ships local citrus, flowers (mainly gladioli), vegetables, and seafood. Electronic equipment and cigars are manufacture and lumber processed in the city. It is home to Edison Community College (1961).

The community was established as a fort in 1841, and incorporated as a city in 1905. The surrender of Holatto-Micco, the last Seminole chief, took place here in 1858. Thomas Edison had his longtime (1886–1931) winter home and laboratory in the city; it is now open to the public.
