Fort Payne

Town and administrative headquarters of De Kalb County, northeast Alabama; population (2000) 12,900. It is situated on a branch of the Coosa River, 54 km/34 mi northeast of Gadsden. It developed during a mining boom in the 1880s, and is now a centre for farming, lumbering, light industry, and tourism.
