Fort Scott

Town and administrative headquarters of Bourbon County, southeast Kansas; population (2000) 8,300. It is located 48 km/30 mi north of Pittsburg and 8 km/5 mi west of the Missouri state border. Nearby coal mines and quarries are important to the city's economy. It is the home of Fort Scott Community College (1919). Fort Scott National Historic Site is also in the town.

The town of Fort Scott grew up around a military post established in 1842. It was a centre of conflict between pro- and antislavery factions in the 1850s.
