Fort St James

Small town in Bulkley-Nechako Regional District, north-central British Columbia, Canada; population (1991) 2,100. It is situated on the southeast shore of Stuart Lake, at the confluence of the Stuart and Necoslie rivers, 113 km/70 mi northwest of Prince George. Established in 1806 as a North West Company trading post, it was the capital of New Caledonia from 1821-57. The oldest white community in British Columbia, it is now a rail stop in a lumbering, mining, and livestock raising area. A Carrier American Indian reserve and Fort St James National Historic Park are both nearby.
